Fuzzy Ponies!

A question we get asked a lot at DuBois Center is, “What do you do with the horses in the winter?” The answer varies depending on the severity of the weather. Horses possess many adaptations to help them stay comfortable in even the most extreme conditions.

For instance, you might notice that our herd is fuzzier in the winter. Their thicker coats help insulate them from the cold, as well as retaining oil that repels moisture. Internally, their metabolism heats the horses from the inside out. As long as a horse has an adequate supply of hay and grain (which we provide) to fuel this “furnace,” it will not suffer from lower temperatures. Short bouts of physical exertion, such as bucking and running as well as shivering, also help to heat up muscles and stabilize internal temperatures.

During extreme conditions, like during the recent polar vortex, our horses come into the barn daily for an extra feeding. The barn is adapted as a wind shelter and left open on one end, allowing the horses to meander in and out at their leisure. In addition, there is a heated waterer outside the barn, providing the horses (and barn cats) with constant access to fresh water.

So, when the temperatures drop and wind speeds pick up, have no fear – a combination of horse anatomy and proactive care ensure the health of our herd.

Join Green DuBois on Feb. 16

Join the team and make a difference! Removing invasive species, such as Japanese honeysuckle, is the priority for the day. Invasives are insidious – “choking” out native plants and affecting tree reproduction essential for healthy woodlands. This is a great opportunity to move those muscles, meet and work with others who care about the environment, rescue wildlife habitat, support native plants and help ensure the future of DuBois Center’s wonderful woodlands. No special skills are needed. Dress for the weather – layers recommended – and bring lopping shears if you have them. Minimum Age: 16, unless accompanied by a parent. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP by MONDAY, FEB 11.For more information or to sign up, contact DuBois Center at dcinfo@DuBoisCenter.org or 618-787-2202.

WINTER PROJECTS: Looking for One?

If you like to work with your hands and have some spare time over the winter, DuBois Center has some indoor winter projects that might be of interest. Enjoy refinishing furniture? We have a coffee table in need of some TLC. Upholstery interest you more? We have two chairs that need attention – backs and seats only. Here’s an interesting one… refinishing arrows. Removing and replacing damaged feathers takes time, patience and the right tools. We have a couple dozen that need attention. All three of these projects can be done in the comfort of your home or here at camp.

DIGITAL CAMERAS — Used Compact Models Needed

Great photos and smart phones go hand in hand nowadays. So, what happened to all those small, point and shoot cameras – the Coolpix, PowerShot and FinePix? Last year, we posted a similar request and received 6-8 cameras. They were a big hit especially during summer camp and Mother-Daughter Retreat. We are currently in search of 4-6 additional used (or new) point & shoot digital cameras for this summer. They are great for scavenger hunts, photography classes, photo booths and so much more. Requirements: good working condition and SD card compatible.

Year-End Support for Ministry at DuBois Center

This time of year, we are more mindful of giving thanks – for family, friends, our church community and God at work in our lives. At DuBois Center, we are also thankful for stories, especially ones of connection, challenge and transformation. These stories tell of new-found confidence for first-time campers, deepening parent-child relationships, faith discussions that come alive, individuals transformed into communities, unlikely friendships built on respect and so much more. Scores of dedicated volunteers, staff members and donors together make DuBois Center a place of welcome and hospitality, a place to connect, belong and grow… a place where faith is nurtured and stories are written. With your financial support this work continues. Click here to read our annual letter which highlights aspects of our shared ministry in the outdoors at DuBois Center in 2018. This is your ministry, the work of your congregations, the work of the Illinois South Conference. We hope you will consider a tax-deductible year-end gift. You may donate safely online or, if you prefer, use this form and mail your donation. With so many demands on your resources, we are truly honored by your gifts of financial support as well as offerings of prayer, time and talent. Thank you.
