Volunteers are the Heart of DuBois Center

Volunteers are the heart of strong and healthy outdoor ministry programs. At DuBois Center, volunteers serve throughout the year on committees and teams, at the barn, in the office, on work projects, as retreat leaders and fund raisers. During the summer, there are a variety of ways to be involved and make a difference in the lives of the young people we serve. Join us for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon, a couple days during the week or a full session of camp. Volunteers work hand in hand with paid summer staff to provide our fun, engaging and faith-filled program.

There is something to be learned from any job, but there are more resume-building skills and practical work experience packed into one summer on camp staff than in almost any other job! Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Leadership and Planning are just some of the skills that come to mind. Working at summer camp IS a real job, but also an opportunity to serve others and make forever friends. DuBois Center is currently accepting applications for energetic, child-focused and fun-loving individuals to serve on our summer staff. Check out the Summer of Service flyer and this piece from the American Camp Association, then consider whether an amazing summer at DuBois Center might be just the opportunity you have been looking for. With leaves and random snowflakes falling, summer camp seems eons away! However, planning is in full swing and summer staff recruitment kicks off over Thanksgiving weekend.
We are in search of caring, hard-working individuals who enjoy the outdoors, love to have fun, and can embrace their silly side. They must have a passion for working with young people, and a heart for ministry and service. Paid and volunteer positions are available for Summer 2020.

Camp Nurses – Servants with Sunscreen

Despite the falling leaves, it’s never too early to think about summer. One setting for ministry at DuBois Center is our Health Center. Volunteer camp nurses, most of whom are RNs, are a vital piece of our summer camp program. Many find serving at DuBois Center to be a rewarding mission opportunity, one that is quite different from their regular job. Responsibilities include reviewing camper medical forms, conducting health screenings, receiving & administering medications, providing first aid & basic medical treatment, and documentation. But when you really get down to it, nurses spend most of their time removing ticks, soothing rashes, distributing medications and providing extra TLC for homesick and nervous campers. If you are an RN, please consider serving with us for a full or partial week. The living quarters do have AC and there is often time to join us for worship, explore the woods or just sit back and read a book. Thanks for the Memories!

Thanks for the memories and all the digital cameras you donated!
Over the past couple of years, we have been collecting small, point and shoot cameras – the ones pushed to the back of the closet when cell phones were upgraded. These gifts are now being used year-round by summer campers and their counselors, retreat participants and others. They take pictures of their adventures or get creative during photo scavenger hunts. Here are some fun shots from the last year.

HATS OFF to our Volunteer Nurses!

Health care professionals are a key component of our summer camp ministry, but rather than starched “whites” you are more likely to find them decked out in camp tees, shorts and sunscreen. Camp nurses deal with a variety of ailments – everything from ticks to homesickness, fevers to sprains. They provide special attention when a camper needs a little extra TLC or just a break from the action. Theirs is a ministry of presence, compassion and healing.

This past summer, we were blessed by the ministry of two volunteer camp nurses. A very special thanks to Donna Asbridge from St. Paul’s UCC in Freeburg and Kathy Asselmeier from St. John UCC in Maeystown. As usual, Nurse Bandit (Donna’s camp name) went above and beyond. She was present for every Sunday and Wednesday check-in day – all nine of them, whether she was the nurse for the week or not. She was always ready to jump in with her ukulele or guitar and assist with worship, or provide wise counsel for our leaders. This was summer #8 for Donna – at least in recent history, and each of these summers she has volunteered for multiple weeks. Nurse Stitch (Kathy’s camp name) was new to her role at camp, but definitely not new to nursing! She was a great addition to our team with her winning smiles and calm demeanor. Her motivation? A heart for service and hugs from her grandchildren, one of whom was attending camp on her own for the first time. Thanks to both of these amazing women!
