Fuzzy Ponies!

A question we get asked a lot at DuBois Center is, “What do you do with the horses in the winter?” The answer varies depending on the severity of the weather. Horses possess many adaptations to help them stay comfortable in even the most extreme conditions.

For instance, you might notice that our herd is fuzzier in the winter. Their thicker coats help insulate them from the cold, as well as retaining oil that repels moisture. Internally, their metabolism heats the horses from the inside out. As long as a horse has an adequate supply of hay and grain (which we provide) to fuel this “furnace,” it will not suffer from lower temperatures. Short bouts of physical exertion, such as bucking and running as well as shivering, also help to heat up muscles and stabilize internal temperatures.

During extreme conditions, like during the recent polar vortex, our horses come into the barn daily for an extra feeding. The barn is adapted as a wind shelter and left open on one end, allowing the horses to meander in and out at their leisure. In addition, there is a heated waterer outside the barn, providing the horses (and barn cats) with constant access to fresh water.

So, when the temperatures drop and wind speeds pick up, have no fear – a combination of horse anatomy and proactive care ensure the health of our herd.

Don’t forget – BUNCO Night is THIS Saturday!

Join Region 2 for a night of winter blues-busting fun at St. Paul UCC in Columbia on Saturday, February 9. Play BUNCO and support DuBois Center and Kindercottage – all at the same time!

Bunco is an exciting dice game that is easy to learn. Children as young as 10 or 11 can be successful and have fun, so make sure to bring the whole family! Doors open at 6:30 pm; play begins at 7 pm. Cost to play is just $10 per person and a silent auction and 50/50 raffle will also be available. All proceeds benefit DuBois Center and our mission.

This year, Bunco Night is again being paired with an effort to “Fill the Cupboard” at Kindercottage. By February, the major food collection holidays are a distant memory and cupboards need restocking – so make sure to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the cause.

Help spread the word – invite everyone you know! Check out this flyer for more details.

Stewardship in Action

The weather was perfect for last Saturday’s inaugural Green DuBois Stewardship Day at DuBois Center. Volunteers split into teams to tackle two projects – invasive species removal and organizing and cleaning up the scrap pile and lumber shed. It was a day full of laughter, learning and fellowship – and a little bit of mud! With both scrap and usable materials sorted into discrete piles and boards stored neatly on shelves, the lumber shed looks like a brand-new building! Targets for the invasive species removal team included bush honeysuckle, autumn olive and multiflora rose. Over three hundred individual plants were removed from the stretch of woodlands from Oak Lodge to Picnic Point. This will allow populations of native plants to recover and protect DuBois Center’s amazing biodiversity. Keep an eye out for more opportunities to join in caring for our little section of Creation!
Interested in joining the Green DuBois initiative? The next Green DuBois meeting will be at the Illinois South Conference Highland office on Wednesday, December 5 at 1:30pm. Join us if you’re interested in environmental sustainability and stewardship, natural sciences, outdoor recreation, or just love DuBois Center!

Calling all Handicrafters!

Are you gifted with gourds, clever with color or cloth, handy with hardware, talented with tools or skilled in stitchery? If yes, DuBois Center is now accepting applications for Craft Vendors at our annual Fall Festival on Sunday, October 7. Each year, over 2,000 people turn out for this family friendly event.

To learn more about displaying your wares, click here. To register, click here. At this event, the focus is on hand-crafted pieces; no items may be sold that are primarily commercially produced. We are also continuing to encourage the addition of truly vintage and re-purposed merchandise. A limited number of vendor spaces are available, so don’t delay.

For more information, contact Susan Fuchs at SusanKFuchs@gmail.com or 618-978-3182.

Thanks for Making Camp Memories Possible!

As DuBois Center’s summer camp season draws to a close, we would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your support. Without the multitude of prayers, volunteer hours and financial support, the life-changing experience of a week at camp simply would not be possible for the hundreds of DuBois Center campers. Friendships built and renewed, faith nurtured, self-confidence bolstered, nature discovered – these experiences shape lives and develop healthier happier children. THANK YOU for being part of the ministry of DuBois Center!

Who Done It?

This beautiful quilt was delivered to DuBois Center in 2017 for a raffle to support DuBois Center. However, we had enough quilts that year and wanted to save it for Fall Festival in 2018. We want to give the appropriate credit to the donor, but no name was included with the creation when it was delivered and the staff cannot recall exactly who donated it. It was safely stored in the office, but now we’d like to give credit where credit is due. We are preparing the posters and publicity for the 3 quilts donated in the this year’s drawings (more information coming soon). If you can solve the mystery of the brown quilt, please contact Norma Borgmann at 618-533-1658 or 618-292-4617 or nborgmann1658@charter.net.  Thanks for your help in finding “Who Done It?”
